The ongoing tension between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a new turn, as the internet bursts into conversation over Trump's latest remarks. Trump’s claim that only 4% of Ukrainians trust Zelensky quickly gained traction in international discussions. However, this figure has been debunked, with fresh polling data revealing a much different reality.
Trump’s comments were made after Zelensky’s statements about the U.S.-Russia negotiations in Saudi Arabia, where the Ukrainian president asserted that Russia’s propagandists were behind the misinformation regarding his popularity. Trump’s inflammatory language accused Ukraine of continuing the war with Russia, and of course, claimed that the 4% trust figure was true. This caused a stir, but the actual figures tell a vastly different story.
According to a Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) poll conducted from February 4-9, 57% of Ukrainians trust President Zelensky, with only 37% expressing distrust. This 20% gap clearly demonstrates his continued and stable support among his citizens. In fact, Zelensky’s approval rating has risen in recent months, a positive trend amid the ongoing war and difficult negotiations.
In comparison, Trump’s approval rating in the United States, according to Real Clear Politics, stands at 47.9%, with a near-equal 48.5% disapproving of him. The data suggests a divided American public, with Trump’s numbers on the negative side of the spectrum. This stark contrast between Zelensky’s rising popularity and Trump’s struggling approval is striking, especially as Zelensky remains firm in defending Ukraine’s interests amidst pressure from Russia and international powers.
Trump’s accusation, claiming only 4% trust in Zelensky, appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the Ukrainian president’s position on the world stage. It seems more like an effort to weaken Zelensky’s influence over negotiations, rather than a factual assertion. Yet, the data tells a different story — Zelensky enjoys broad support, with Ukrainian society standing behind him in times of crisis.
As the war continues and the world watches, Zelensky’s credibility and leadership appear stronger than ever, while Trump’s approval remains deeply polarized. In times of political warfare and diplomacy, numbers and trust are key — and the latest polls show that Zelensky’s grip on the Ukrainian people is solid, even as global leaders continue to navigate complex international relations.
